New Toolkit Assists Agencies in Developing Financial Capability Programs

New Toolkit Assists Agencies in Developing Financial Capability Programs

CFED, in partnership with the Office of Community Services of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has developed “Integrating Financial Capability: A Toolkit for Social Service Organizations.” The toolkit was designed to help decision-makers and program managers develop financial capability programs. This step-by-step guide provides community-based organizations tools to determine how best to use financial capability strategies to support their clients, whether they’re providing financial capability services for the first time or want to improve or expand existing efforts.

This guide is an example of how federal agencies are moving asset building forward asset building.  There are seven key strategies that organizations can use to help families build financial capability:

  • Financial education
  • Financial counseling and coaching
  • Credit and debt management
  • Tax credits and filing assistance
  • Access to federal and state benefits
  • Access to safe & affordable financial products
  • Savings mechanisms

The toolkit is available as a draft for comment here.  CFED would appreciate your feedback on the toolkit draft via the online feedback survey found here.  If you have any questions about the toolkit or survey, please contact Kori Hattemer at khattemer@cfed.org.
